Dive into the Enchantment: Nice Carnival 2025 Celebrates the ‘King of the Oceans’

Under the azure skies of the French Riviera, the city of Nice is preparing to host its illustrious Carnival from February 12 to March 2, 2025, embracing the captivating theme of the “King of the Oceans. (Le Roi des Océans)”

A Journey into the Depths

For two vibrant weeks, Nice transforms into an open-air theater where marine fantasies come alive. The “Carnival Parades” (“Corsi”) will showcase elaborately decorated floats depicting sea creatures, oceanic legends, and submerged treasures. The elegant “Flower Parades” will feature floats adorned with floral compositions, accompanied by characters in extraordinary costumes, music, scents, and colors, offering a visual delight.

Origins and History

The origins of the Nice Carnival date back to 1294, when Charles d’Anjou, Count of Provence, mentioned spending the “joyous days of Carnival” in the city. This makes it one of the oldest carnivals in the world. The term “Carnival” itself comes from the medieval Latin “carne levare,” meaning “to remove meat,” referring to the festivities preceding Lent.

In 1873, the “Committee of Festivities” was established under the patronage of the municipality, aiming to organize and amplify the celebrations. This led to the introduction of structured parades, known as “Corsi,” featuring decorated floats, masked participants, and various performances. The “Flower Battles” (“Batailles de Fleurs”) also became a highlight, where elegantly adorned floats paraded, with characters in extraordinary costumes, accompanied by music, scents, and colors for the pleasure of the eyes.
