La Gacilly Photo Festival – Celebrate Art, Nature, and Photography in Brittany, France

A Hidden Gem in Rural France

Tucked away in the lush countryside of Brittany, the charming village of La Gacilly transforms every summer into an open-air museum unlike any other. As a French travel guide and passionate lover of the arts, I had heard whispers of the Festival Photo La Gacilly for years. But nothing quite prepared me for the magic of actually walking through its cobbled streets, surrounded by towering photographic installations and the scent of blooming hydrangeas.

A Festival with a Mission

What makes this festival so special isn’t just its breathtaking visuals—it’s the message behind them. Since its creation in 2004, the Festival Photo La Gacilly has focused on themes that matter: the environment, human rights, and the relationship between mankind and nature. Each year, the festival highlights a specific region of the world, giving voice to photographers who capture the beauty and challenges of our planet.

When I visited, the theme was “Oriental Visions”—a stunning exploration of Asia through the lens of photographers from around the globe. The images, some as large as buildings, were displayed outdoors, blending seamlessly with the village’s stone houses, flower gardens, and winding alleys. It felt as though the village itself was telling a story—one of hope, resilience, and global awareness.

Walking Through a Living Gallery

What sets La Gacilly apart from other photo festivals is its immersive experience. You don’t just look at the art—you live it. I wandered for hours, camera in hand, tracing paths along the Aff River and into the surrounding forest, where even the trees seemed to whisper secrets. The photos are printed on weather-resistant materials and displayed in unexpected places—on the side of a barn, across a bridge, or nestled between two apple trees.

Families strolled with strollers, teenagers took selfies, and elderly couples sat on benches, quietly contemplating the images. The atmosphere was peaceful yet electric, as if everyone knew they were part of something meaningful.

A Celebration of Community and Culture

Beyond the photography, La Gacilly is a celebration of community spirit. Local artisans open their workshops, cafés spill onto the streets, and music often fills the air. I chatted with a ceramicist who explained how the festival boosts the local economy and brings people together. There’s a palpable pride in the village during the summer months.

And let me tell you—Brittany’s weather can be unpredictable, but even a sudden rain shower didn’t dampen the mood. In fact, watching the droplets slide down a black-and-white portrait of a Mongolian herder only made the image more poignant.

Why You Should Go

Whether you’re an art lover, a photography enthusiast, or simply looking to experience something off the beaten path, the Festival Photo La Gacilly is a must. It’s free, it’s thought-provoking, and it offers a rare chance to see world-class photography in a setting that feels both intimate and grand.

I left La Gacilly with a full heart, a full memory card, and a renewed sense of connection to the world. And I can’t wait to return.
